Although fictional, Miranda Priestley owns the fashion world.

The Devil Wears Prada might just be another Anne Hathaway film to you, but to me it was a life lesson in book and DVD form. It taught me the art of clever humour and that bitchiness exists everywhere - it's just how you deal with it.

I also learned that one should never have to raise their voice in order to obtain control and respect. Throughout the movie Miranda almost sounds monotone and yet she still oozes sophistication and authority.

The film made me aware that although you can love and put your 'all' in to your job, life isn't about working from 6am to practically 6am  - you need balance. We saw the Editor of Runway with her achievements and the respect she possessed in the fashion industry yet we also saw her marriage in shambles and her kids shipped off to their grandmothers. She lived to work and that was the end of it. Devotion is key in a lot of aspects of life but make sure you are devoted to your relationships and your hobbies too.

When those last few moments of your life unfold you'll remember the friends you had growing up and the family you created and loved. What you won't remember is the 'triple, venti, soy, no foam latte' your boss made you get her every morning before you had even clocked in.

If you take away anything from this post let it be these three statements:

1. Don't sell your soul - you are you and your work is work - let them be separate.


2. Fake it till you make it. One thing I've learned growing up is that no one really knows what they're doing, they've just got good at making it seem like they do.


3. Work to live, don't live to work. If you've hit all your deadlines, impressed your boss and outdone yourself in the workplace, reward yourself! If you can afford it get those shoes you've been eyeing up;  take a vacation; make memories.
